The Contract

Our contract involved asbestos removal, strip out and demolition of the St James Swimming Pool on the Coal Orchard development site within Taunton city centre.

St James Swimming pool was an irregular plan building with entrances at the north and south ends. It was brick built, predominantly 1-2 storeys in height, with a three storey section at its north end. It had a mixture of flat, pitched and valley roofs clad in corrugated metal sheeting. A car park occupied the area immediately west of the site. Several Grade II listed buildings were in the immediate vicinity of the site along with the river Tone, a theatre and arts centre, residential buildings, shops and business premises. Due to these key risks dust, noise and vibration controls were particularly important on this project.

Demolition Works

Firstly, qualified L A Moore Ltd operatives removed all non-licensed ACMs listed in the Asbestos Survey Report. Once asbestos had been removed, operatives stripped the building of loose items and then soft stripped the non-structural elements. We removed all waste materials from the building and sorted them for later recycling. The swimming pools were decommissioned allowing us to remove all plant from the plant room. Using hand tools we carefully salvaged engraved stones embedded in the wall at the entrance, for re-use by the local council. We removed two large wall clocks within the pool building, later auctioning them for charity.

We demolished the building down to ground level using a 20t excavator fitted with hydraulic pulveriser attachments, and then broke out the foundations. Our Sandvik tracked crusher crushed all brick, hard-core and concrete arisings to 6F2 specification. Our operatives used the crushed material to make good the excavation voids, leaving a level site.

An archaeological team attended site once the main works were completed and in conjunction with our machine operators dug and assessed several trenches which we then back-filled.

We supplied vehicles and skips to site to remove demolition materials to licensed facilities for recycling or landfill as appropriate.

We recycled 99.5% of all materials arising from this contract.
